Julia Stewart is an artist based in Central Victoria on Djaara Country. A graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts (2016), her practice spans painting and drawing, taking inspiration from domestic interiors, everyday objects, and the surrounding landscape. Through close observation, Stewart explores the quiet rhythms, shifting light, and subtle geometries of daily life, creating works that reflect an intimate connection to place, memory, and looking.
For this body of work, Stewart draws on views from her home and the landscape beyond her window. Through the repetitive acts of painting and drawing, she became increasingly interested in colour, form, and pattern, and in the ways familiar shapes gradually move towards abstraction. Rather than directly depicting specific spaces, these works explore the experience of sustained observation and how our perception of place evolves over time.
